from Shirley Brim
I came to know Lillian through the San Mateo Unitarian Universalist church, and the memoir and Aging to Saging (A/S) groups she ran. She had years of experience running groups and she kept us focused with a light hand and great good humor.
The A/S group was nominally a discussion group about aging, but our topics and discussions rambled far and wide. We learned much from each other’s life experiences and hard-earned wisdom, and became really good friends along the way.
Lillian formed the memoir group as a spin-off from the A/S group when she was writing her own memoirs and she brought a bunch of us along for the ride. We learned about writing and ever more deeply about each other, laughing and commiserating together as we recalled our best and sometimes difficult memories.
Through it all, Lillian guided us and encouraged us to recognize the value and sweetness of our our experiences and the value of the lessons learned. My life is so much richer for being Lillian’s friend and the recipient of her sharp wit and deep caring.
Lillian stands tall as one the brightest lights in my life. She left a legacy of caring and dedication to truth that lives on in all of those she touched. I miss her and I cherish her memory.
